Retail discount tricks to know
- Anchor pricing: a 'was €200, now €120' is only a deal if €200 was a real price.
- Sale cycles: most categories go on sale every 4–8 weeks. Waiting pays.
- Clearance isn't always cheapest — check current online prices first.
- Coupon + sale: some stores let them stack, some don't. Test at checkout.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do stacked discounts work?
Multiplicatively, not additively. 20% off then 10% off = total 28% off (not 30%). Final price = original × 0.8 × 0.9 = original × 0.72.
What's 'original price from sale price'?
Reverse calculation. If a jacket is €63 after 30% off, the original was 63 / 0.7 = €90. Useful for verifying store claims about the size of a discount.
Is BOGO (buy-one-get-one-free) a 50% discount?
Effectively yes, per unit — you get 2 for the price of 1. If both items are worth the full price to you. If you only wanted one, it's not a discount at all.
How do I compare 20% off vs €5 off?
Calculate both for your exact item. €5 off a €20 item = 25% off (better). €5 off an €80 item = 6.25% off (worse than 20%).
