Getting the best rate when travelling
- Avoid airport currency booths โ worst rates, highest fees.
- Use cards that advertise no foreign-exchange fee.
- When prompted 'pay in your home currency or local?' always pick local โ 'Dynamic Currency Conversion' adds a hidden markup.
- Withdraw from ATMs in the local currency; decline any conversion offer at the machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do the rates come from?
Daily reference rates from the European Central Bank (ECB). These are mid-market rates โ actual consumer exchange rates (at banks, airports, cards) include a margin of 1โ5%.
Why does my bank give me a worse rate?
Banks and money changers add a spread (1โ3%) and often a fixed fee. Online multi-currency accounts (Wise, Revolut) typically convert at or near mid-market rates.
Are the rates real-time?
ECB rates update once per business day at 4 PM CET. For trading or large transfers, use a FX provider with live rates. For travel planning, ECB rates are close enough.
Does it support crypto?
No โ only fiat currencies in this tool. Crypto rates are volatile minute-to-minute and need a specialised live feed.
